πŸŽ€ Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Know the Signs, Support Early Detection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

An important opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer, encourage people to understand the signs and symptoms, and remind us all of the importance of looking after our health.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, and while it can affect anyone, early diagnosis can make a significant difference to treatment options and outcomes.

At ENA Care Group, we believe that good care is about supporting the whole person β€” not simply their medical needs. For people living with cancer, undergoing treatment or recovering from treatment, having the right care and support at home can make everyday life feel more manageable.

πŸŽ€ What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer develops when cells in the breast grow and divide abnormally, forming a tumour.

Although breast cancer is most commonly associated with women, men can also develop breast cancer, so everyone should be aware of changes to their body.

There are different types of breast cancer, and treatment will depend on factors such as the type and stage of the cancer. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or targeted therapies.

πŸ” Knowing the Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Knowing what is normal for you can help you recognise changes that may need medical attention.

Possible signs and symptoms of breast cancer can include:

  • A new lump or swelling in the breast or armpit

  • A change in the size or shape of the breast

  • A change in the appearance or texture of the skin, such as dimpling

  • Changes to the nipple, including a change in its appearance or becoming inverted

  • Nipple discharge, particularly if it contains blood

  • A change in the shape or appearance of the breast

  • Persistent pain or discomfort in the breast or armpit

These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily mean that someone has breast cancer. However, if you notice a change that is unusual for you, it is important to speak to your GP.

🩷 Breast Awareness and Screening

Breast awareness is about knowing what is normal for your body and being confident about reporting changes.

In the UK, eligible women are routinely invited for breast screening (mammography). Screening is designed to detect breast cancer at an early stage, sometimes before there are any noticeable symptoms.

It is important to attend screening when invited and to seek medical advice if you notice a change, even if you have recently had a mammogram.

🏑 How Can Care at Home Help Someone Living With Cancer?

A cancer diagnosis and its treatment can affect far more than someone's physical health.

Treatment can leave people feeling tired, weak or unable to manage everyday tasks in the way they normally would. Some people may need additional support temporarily, while others may require longer-term care.

At ENA Care Group, our care services can be tailored around the individual and their circumstances.

Depending on someone's needs, care at home may include support with:

🩷 Personal care – helping with washing, dressing and maintaining personal hygiene.

🍽️ Nutrition and hydration – supporting someone with meals, drinks and maintaining a healthy routine.

πŸ’Š Medication support – helping clients manage their medication routines safely, where this forms part of their care plan.

🏠 Everyday tasks – providing practical assistance around the home so that clients can continue living in familiar surroundings.

🀝 Companionship and emotional support – being there to listen, provide reassurance and help reduce feelings of isolation.

🚢 Maintaining independence – supporting people to continue doing as much as they can for themselves, while providing assistance where it is needed.

For people with more complex needs, our experienced care team can also provide complex care at home, working alongside families and other professionals to provide consistent, person-centred support.

🌸 Living Well With Cancer

Cancer does not define a person.

For many people, maintaining their independence, routines, relationships and connection with their home remains incredibly important during and after treatment.

Good care should support those things wherever possible.

At ENA, our approach is centred around the individual. We take the time to understand what matters to each person, what support they need and how we can help them remain as independent as possible in their own home.

Whether someone needs a little additional support during treatment or more comprehensive care for complex needs, the right care package can provide reassurance for both the individual and their family.

πŸ’— Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Reminder to Check In

It is an opportunity to have conversations, understand the signs and symptoms, attend screening when invited and encourage the people around us to look after themselves.

If you notice a change in your breast or body that is unusual for you, don't ignore it. Speak to your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional.

And if you or someone you care about needs additional support at home, we're here to help.
