💜 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026: Protecting the Rights, Dignity and Safety of Older People
We will hold your hand every step of the way.
Every year on 15 June, people across the world come together to recognise World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) — a day dedicated to raising awareness of the abuse, neglect and exploitation experienced by millions of older people globally.
As our population ages, it is more important than ever that we work together to ensure older people are treated with the dignity, respect and care they deserve. Whether abuse occurs in a person's home, within a care setting, or through financial exploitation and scams, everyone has a role to play in identifying concerns and taking action.
👵 What Is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse is any act — or failure to act — that causes harm or distress to an older person within a relationship where trust is expected.
Abuse can take many forms, including:
🛑 Physical Abuse
Hitting, pushing, inappropriate restraint, or misuse of medication.
💬 Psychological or Emotional Abuse
Threats, humiliation, intimidation, bullying, or controlling behaviour.
💷 Financial Abuse
Theft, fraud, coercion relating to money or property, or misuse of financial resources.
🚫 Neglect
Failing to provide appropriate care, support, food, hydration, medication, or access to healthcare.
🔒 Discriminatory Abuse
Unfair treatment based on age, disability, race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics.
⚠️ Organisational Abuse
Poor care practices within organisations or services that undermine dignity, rights, and wellbeing.
🔍 Recognising the Signs
Abuse is not always obvious. Some signs that may indicate an older person is experiencing abuse include:
✔️ Unexplained injuries or repeated accidents
✔️ Sudden changes in behaviour, mood, or confidence
✔️ Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities
✔️ Poor personal hygiene or unmet care needs
✔️ Missing money, possessions, or unusual financial transactions
✔️ Reluctance to speak openly in the presence of certain individuals
✔️ Unexplained weight loss, dehydration, or deterioration in health
If something doesn't feel right, it is important to trust your instincts and seek advice.
🤝 Everyone Has a Responsibility
Safeguarding is not solely the responsibility of healthcare professionals or care providers. Family members, friends, neighbours, carers, and members of the public all play an important role in protecting vulnerable adults.
By remaining vigilant and speaking up when concerns arise, we can help ensure that older people are safe, supported, and able to live with independence and dignity.
🏡 How Quality Care Can Help
For many older people, remaining at home is key to maintaining independence and well-being. High-quality live-in care provides:
❤️ Consistent companionship
🏠 Support within familiar surroundings
💊 Assistance with medication and health management
🍽️ Help with daily living activities
🚶 Encouragement to remain active and engaged
🛡️ Ongoing monitoring of wellbeing and safeguarding concerns
Professional carers are often well placed to identify subtle changes that may indicate an older person needs additional support or protection.
💜 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 Theme
This year's theme, "Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work", reminds us that raising awareness alone is not enough.
We must continue to:
✅ Promote safeguarding education
✅ Empower older people to speak up
✅ Support carers and families
✅ Strengthen reporting and safeguarding processes
✅ Challenge ageism and discrimination
✅ Create communities where older people feel valued and protected
