This week, we reached out to a relative of one of our clients and asked if she'd be happy to share her experience of how she found ENA and the care that her mum needed once she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's; we have kept her identity anonymous as per her request.
When Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it felt as though our entire world shifted. I remember the day vividly. We were seated in a small, sterile room at the local GP’s surgery, Mum fidgeting with the hem of her cardigan, and me holding her hand, trying to appear stronger than I felt. The doctor, a kind-eyed woman in her forties, delivered the news gently, yet it hit us with the force of a lorry.
For months, we had been noticing subtle changes in Mum. She would forget where she’d put her keys, get confused with the names of her grandchildren, and sometimes, she seemed to drift off into her own world, leaving us behind. We thought it was just part of ageing. But as the forgetfulness grew more frequent, and her confusion more pronounced, we knew something wasn’t right.
The Journey to Diagnosis
Getting to the diagnosis was an arduous journey. Our first challenge was convincing Mum to see a doctor. She was always fiercely independent, priding herself on her sharp mind and quick wit. The suggestion that something might be wrong was met with denial and resistance. Eventually, it was a scare — Mum getting lost on her way back from the shops — that pushed her to agree to a visit.
The GP referred us to a specialist, and the wait for an appointment felt interminable. During that time, I scoured the internet, looking for answers, support, anything that might prepare us for what was to come. When the day of the specialist appointment finally arrived, we were met with a barrage of tests and assessments. It was exhausting for Mum and emotionally draining for me.
The diagnosis, when it came, was both a relief and a heartbreak. Relief because we finally had an answer, and heartbreak because the answer was Alzheimer’s. Knowing the name of her condition, however, allowed us to start planning for the future and seeking the support we would need.
Arranging Alzheimer's Care at Home
The impact of the diagnosis on our family was profound. We had to adjust our lives to accommodate Mum’s changing needs. We educated ourselves about the disease, learning to be patient and gentle, even when frustration set in. One of the most significant blessings during this time was the outstanding Alzheimer's care at home we received from ENA Care Group.
The Role of ENA Care Group
ENA Care Group stepped in and became an integral part of our lives. Their carers were not just professional but compassionate and attentive, treating Mum with the utmost respect and dignity. They provided us with invaluable support, offering personalized Alzheimer's care at home that allowed Mum to maintain a sense of independence and comfort. Their presence gave us peace of mind, knowing that Mum was in capable and caring hands.
The carers from ENA were like family. They engaged Mum in activities she enjoyed, helped her with daily tasks, and provided companionship that brightened her days. Their training and experience were evident in how they handled challenging situations, always remaining calm and patient. The emotional support they offered to us, as a family, was equally important, providing guidance and reassurance during difficult times.
Advocacy for Change
Yet, there are changes I fervently wish to see for people affected by dementia. The path to diagnosis needs to be quicker and more straightforward. Early diagnosis is crucial, but many families face long waits and a lack of clear information. There should be more public awareness about dementia to reduce the stigma and help communities better support those affected.
I would also advocate for more funding into research for treatments and ultimately a cure. The emotional and financial toll on families is immense, and greater support from government and healthcare systems is essential.
Reflection and Gratitude
For us, the diagnosis was a pivotal moment. It marked the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with challenges, but also with moments of profound love and connection. Despite the difficulties, I’m grateful for every day we have with Mum, cherishing the small victories and the time we spend together. The Alzheimer's care at home support from ENA Care Group has been a cornerstone in our journey, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
